Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (نصرتفتحعلیخان, into Urdu) (October 13rd 1948 with Lyallpur, Panjâb Pakistan be born - August 16th 1997 with London in England), was a Pakistani, main musician of Qawwalî, a musical style Soufi.
Nusrat begins its career rather late, at the thirty years age, and as he will affirm it during several interviews, following the call of Allah perceived in a premonitory dream. Its powerful voice makes of it an enormous high-speed motorboat in the Islamic world and it is one of the first singers of Asia to know notoriety in Occident, in particular thanks to its services with the Théâtre of the City as from 1985.
In 1995, it collaborates with Eddie Vedder on the original soundtrack of the film Last walk ( Dead Man Walking ) of Tim Robbins. Its participation in several original soundtracks, albums of Western artists like Night Song (1996) with Michael Brook or the remix of its song Mustt Mustt by the group of Trip hop Massive Attack, as well as its friendship with Peter Gabriel (on Real World Records), help to increase its popularity in Europe and with the the United States.
Nusrat is responsible for the modern evolution of the Qawwalî. Although it was certainly not the first to do it, it made popular the insertion of song Khyal in the qawwalî, i.e. of improvised solos, during the song, where it sings the Sargam, that is to say the name of the note sung with its own height. It also tried, as we already evoked, to mix the music qawwalî with more Western aspects like the music techno or the trip hop.
According to the Guinness Book of the records, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan holds the world records of the number of recordings for an artist of qawwalî with a total of 125 albums. Was the beginning of its career the object, in 1997, of a short film entitled Nusrat Has Left the Building… But When?
Nusrat died 20 years day for day after Elvis Presley of the continuations of her obesity at the 48 years age.
Since his death, its nephew Rahat Fateh Ali Khan took again the torch and walks in his steps.
