Guillaume Bautru, count of Tightening (1588 with Angers - March 7th 1665 with Paris) is a French, favorite satirical poet and diplomatic agent of Richelieu.

Its life and its work

He is lord of Louvaines, to advise State under Louis XIII and Louis XIV, introducer of the ambassadors in the king, to advise State, ambassador plenipotentiary and ambassador near the archduchess of Flanders, sent of the king in Spain, England and Savoy. He is one of the founding members of the French Academy, to which he is elected in 1634.

Protected from Richelieu, it is made build this year a hotel by Louis Vau, at the moment when the cardinal makes arrange in Paris the Rue Cross-of-Small-Fields. This building will become later the hotel Colbert and currently shelters the National institute of the inheritance and the National institute of history of art. Two years later, Guillaume Bautru buys the Château of Tightening, in the Pays of the Loire, which it completes to make build while following the plans of Hercules de Rohan and whose grounds are given to him in Baronnie by Richelieu.

It is a high colors, known character for its libertinage and its liveliness bouffonne. It remains of him some Satire S, such as Ambiguous the , appeared in 1616, and Onozandre or the belief of coarse the , appeared in 1620:

Pierre Bayle said of him: “It was one of the beautiful Spirits of the XVIIe century. It faisoit especially to admire itself by its witty remarks, & its fines distributed; & one finds in the Writers of sound tems thousand marks of the beautiful reputation where it étoit. It is a man , disoit one of them, which puts part of its Philosophy to admire only very-little of things, & which for 50 years has been the delights of all the Ministers, all the Favorites, & generally of all the Large ones of the Kingdom, & forever be their Flateur . ” In support of its regard for the spirit of Bautru, Bayle also quotes Saint-Lover, which made fun of those which confused “the turlupinades and the points” with the witty remarks of Bautru:

If you oyez an ambiguity,
You throw ease vostre hat,
And take its direction malautru
For one of the beautiful words of Bautru.
