The Numides are the indigenous people of the kingdom called Numidie which was in current the Algérie overflowing in the west of the Tunisia and is Morocco. Old Numides had as a capital Cirta (the antique Constantine). Berber semi wandering, Numides was divided into different tribes. The tribes of the oriental party of Numidie bore the name of Massyles (of Put Islands, Ilès being the great-grandfather of Massinissa) and those of the Western part that of Massaesyles.

The name Numide comes from the Greek word meaning Nomade, the Romains kept this name to designate these populations autochtones of North Africa, Numides had several kings, most famous were Gaia, Massinissa, Micipsa, Jugurtha, Juba Ier, Juba II and Ptolémée.

Following the deciphering of certain libyques inscriptions, it appeared that Numides spoke a language Berbère. They had the passion of the horses and were famous being large riders (being useful in particular for the army Carthaginoise), tradition which is found still nowadays in expressed equestrian called " Fantasia s". They were of religion animist and polytheist, some their beliefs perduré until our days at the Berbères, like the rites of the rain, the belief in guards spirits of places.

However, very few direct traces reached us on their religion, lifestyle, custom and habits because of the various invasions which these people underwent after the collapse of the Roman empire. Old libraries and books, such as the famous collection of the genealogy of the kings numides (about which Hérodote speaks) during the Greek period, disappeared during one from these invasions. Nevertheless, we find an abundance of accounts concerning these people in the literatures Greek and Roman of antiquity.
