Nuclear plant of Zaporijjia

The nuclear plant of Zaporizhzhia is one of the five nuclear plants built in Ukraine. It is in central Ukraine, on the commune of Enerhodar, to approximately 50 km of the town of Zaporijjia, on the banks of the artificial sea created by the dam Kakhovka on the Dniepr.

The power station functions with six nuclear reactors WWER of 910 MW each one, of which the 5 first entered in service between 1985 and 1989, and the sixth was started in 1995. Having powerful clear total of 5  700 MW, the power station of Zaporijjia are most powerful of Europe, with equality with the Nuclear plant of Gravelines in France.

Thermal power of the power station, which reaches practically 20  000 megawatts, requires enormous quantities of cooling water coming from Dniepr, which was widened especially for this site.

The power station of Zaporijjia produces 37 to 38 billion kWh per annum, that is to say a fifth of the Ukrainian electrical production. Since the stopping of the last engine of the Nuclear plant of Tchernobyl, in the year 2000, the activity of this power station is maintained on a very high level to ensure the electric needs for the country.

In spite of the relatively modern design of the engines, the power station undergoes many incidental nuclear. These incidents are due mainly to the financial problems of the Ukraine. Two million dollars (USD) was allotted to the maintenance of the power station between 1994 and 1997.
