Nuclear plant of Philippsburg

The nuclear plant of Philippsburg is near Philippsburg in the area of Karlsruhe (Bade-Wurtemberg) in Germany. It was built in the years 1970. The engine n°1 was brought into service on May 7th, 1979 and the engine n°2 on December 17th, 1984. The engine n°1 is an ebullient water reactor, while the engine n°2 is a pressurized water reactor. The nuclear plant of Philippsburg has an electric output of 926 MW (engine n°1) and of 1458 MW (engine n°2). It is exploited by the company EnBW.

The permanent closure of the power station is planned for 2011 with regard to the engine n°1, and 2017 for the engine n°2.

During these last years, the two engines have undergoes wild criticisms, because they were the object of many breakdowns and incidents.

Incidents

  • In 2001, it was highlighted that the Pressurized water reactor was launched to full mode without the necessary measures not being taken on the flow of the liquid of cooling. Thus, cooling did not function correctly during several hours, in violation of the safety regulations.

  • on August 25th, 2001, a too weak concentration of Bore is detected in the emergency cooling system of the Pressurized water reactor. The engine was disconnected from the network until a survey into the origin of this failure is carried out.

  • In March 2006, several tools used in the field of the safety of the engines disappear.

  • Always in March, the area of Bade-Wurtemberg made change 150 locks of the nuclear plant after the operator had mislaid 12 keys leading to a district of high security, which were not found in spite of pointed research and multiple interrogations. The parquet floor opened legal information for this vol.

  • on April 18th, 2006, at the time of a visit of revision of the ebullient Water reactor, an emergency stop is engaged, whereas a deficit is observed in a tank of pressure of the engine
