Nuclear plant of Gentilly

The nuclear plant of Gentilly is a Canadian nuclear plant located near the town of Bécancour at the Quebec. The name of the site comes from Gentilly, suburbs of Bécancour, it even located in suburbs of the town of Three-Rivers. The power station is localized on southern bank of the Fleuve the St. Lawrence and it is the only nuclear plant in Quebec.

Description

The power station has 2 nuclear reactors: an experimental reactor CANDU - BWR and an engine CANDU. It was built between 1966 and 1983 by the company Hydro-Quebec. Currently Gentilly-1 is stopped and in nuclear phase of Démantèlement, while Gentilly-2 is always in exploitation.

Gentilly-1

Gentilly-1 was a prototype of engine CANDU - BWR. It was conceived to provide an output capacity of 250 MW (E). The design, optimized for the export and the minimization of the costs, was not a success, because on nearly 7 years the engine delivered only 180 days of power. Gentilly-1 is in phase of dismantling.

Gentilly-2

Gentilly-2 is a standard engine CANDU-600, similar to that of the Nuclear plant of Point Lepreau. Engine CANDU-600 was exported in South Korea, Argentine, Romania and in China. The power station has a power of 682 MW (E). Contrary to Gentilly-1, Gentilly-2 shows a good service rate since its startup in 1982.
