Nuclear plant of Fessenheim

The nuclear plant of Fessenheim is located on the commune of Fessenheim (Haut-Rhin) at 23 kilometers (flight of bird) at the N/E of Mulhouse, in edge of the channel of Alsace, between Basle (40 km upstream) and Strasbourg (100 km downstream).

It has two Nuclear reactors with pressurized water (REFERENCE MARK) of 890 MW electric Net each one, brought into service in 1978 and its construction started in 1970. It is the oldest French power station in exploitation, with twenty-nine years of exploitation in 2006. It produced more than 310 billion kWh electricity 1977 at the beginning of 2007. It is a power station of type CP0 (contract stage), like that of Bugey. It thus has a common engine room supplied with its 2 buildings engine.

The average temperature of the water of the primary education circuit is of 303°C for a pressure of 155 bar. There are 3 steam generators by section, 3 pumps primary education and 1 engine.

Approximately 660 agents work with the power station of Fessenheim. To that approximately 2000 indirect work stations are added. The Professional tax of the commune of Fessenheim comes to 70% from the nuclear plant.

Polemic on the closing of the power station

The power station of Fessenheim is currently the oldest power station in activity on the French territory. It was conceived to be in exploitation during 40 years (initial safety Report of 1977).

The ASN (nuclear Authority of safety) gives its agreement every 10 years to the continuation of the exploitation.

At the time of the thirty years of the nuclear plant of Fessenheim, the Network “Sortir the nuclear power” required its immediate closing. However, the power station " function in all sécurité" and its state is currently " broadly satisfaisant" , certified the owner EDF and his supervisions, the nuclear Autorité of safety (ASN) and DRIRE, representative regional of the Ministère of Industry.

The Association trinationale of protection of the population of the neighborhoods of Fessenheim (ATPN), which gathers cities like Freiburg (Germany), Basle (Suisse), of common allemandes, Swiss and French, of associations and the private individuals, wants to deposit a recourse in front of the administrative court of Strasbourg.

Seismic risk

According to a report/ratio of the Autorité of nuclear safety dating from the year 2000, unquestionable functions of safeguard ensuring the cooling of the engine could not be assured more in the event of seism. The discovery of this anomaly led the nuclear plant to declare an incident of level 1 on the scale INNATE.
