Nuclear plant of Diablo Canyon

The Nuclear plant of Diablo Canyon is located at Avila Beach in the Comté of San Luis Obispo in California on a ground of 3,7 km ² at the edge of the Pacific Ocean.

Description

The power station has two pressurized water reactors (REFERENCE MARK) identical to 4 loops built by Westinghouse:
  • Diablo Canyon 1 : 1100 MWe, brought into service in 1984, authorized until 2021.
  • Diablo Canyon 2 : 1100 MWe, brought into service in 1985, authorized until 2025.
The two engines can produce together 18 TWh of electricity every year what makes it possible to meet the needs for 2,2 million inhabitants of Californie.

The owner is the company Pacific Gas & Electric which is also the operating one.

The power station of Diablo Canyon was calculated to tolerate a seism high magnitude coming from four faults of which that of San Andreas and that of Hosgri. To this end it is equipped with important monitoring systems and safety. The seism resistance was difficult to justify what led to a large delay of delivery of the engines.
