Nuclear plant of Borssele

The Nuclear plant of Borssele is located at the Netherlands close to the village of Borssele, in the commune of Borsele.

Description

This power station has the only pressurized water reactor (REFERENCE MARK) for the electrical production of the Netherlands.
  • Borssele : 485 MWe, brought into service in 1973.
The engine of Borssele was built by Siemens to produce electricity at cost reduced for the aluminum producer Pechiney. In 2006, the installation of a more modern steam turbine made it possible to increase the production of 449 MWe to 485 MWe.

Management of waste

The worn fuel is treated by Areva in its factory of La Hague in the English Channel in Basse-Normandie. The contract provides that ultimate waste (those which remain after the treatment) is returned to the Netherlands. This ultimate waste is stored in the installation of COVRA ( Centrale Opslag Voor Radioactief Afval ) which is also established in Borssele and which is the largest national installation of the Netherlands for waste. This installation is adapted for storages for the 100 next years.
