History

The name of Noyal-sur-Vilaine comes, seems it, of Latin " novale" or " novalium" (recently cleared ground). One finds the mention of Noal in 1158, Noial in 1185 (in connection with a lawsuit between a family of the borough and the monks of the priory) and Noyal super Vicenoniam (Latin version of the current name) in 1294

The territory of the primitive parish of Noyal-sur-Vilaine east, says one, one of oldest and vastest of old évêché of Rennes. The parishes of Châteaugiron (the castle of Châteaugiron was undoubtedly built on its territory) and of Brécé (in XIIe century) are dismemberments of the primitive parish of Noyal-sur-Vilaine.

At the 11th century, the count of Rennes Eudes and her sister Adele, abbess of the Saint-Georges Abbey of Rennes authorize Geoffroy, wire of Solomon, to build a castle on the territory of Noyal (Noyal-sur-Vilaine). This parish which depended formerly on old évêché on Rennes belongs since 1158 to the Saint-Melaine Abbey of Rennes. The monks of the Saint-Melaine Abbey of Rennes establish there a priory (before 1152) which ceases existing only in 1604, date on which, it is occupied by the Jesuits who are expelled by it with the Revolution. In the north of the Priory, the farm of the Mound (connected today by the Interval) owes its name with the Home of the Mound which was the house seigneuriale of Noyal (family of Chevaigné until the 15th century then lords of Tizé in Thorigné of 1433 with the Revolution), built on a mound castrale.

Other historical residences exist or one existed on the commune: thus the existence of a mound castrale is attested in Bénazé since the 13th century and was overcome by a castle whose ditches were still visible at the beginning of last century. A manor of XVIe century was acquired with 17th by the ancestor of the current owners, the Pocquet family of High Jussé which comprises several historians (of which Barthélémy Pocquet of High Jussé, which was president of the archaeological company of Ille-et-Vilaine). In the same way, the castle of Orcan Wood, (see low the monuments) date of the 14th century at the 15th century.

The commune of Noyal-sur-Vilaine east chief town of canton in 1790 and integrates that of Châteaugiron in 1801. At the 19th century and 20th century, Noyal-sur-Vilaine loses portions of territory again: the Servon-on-Unpleasant section of the Ford to the profit of and Bas-Noyal which is integrated into Châteaugiron.

Noyal was equipped into 1984 with a public college inter-commune (the college Jacques Brel, commun run with Acigné and Brécé). An old people's home and the poor ones created at the beginning of the 20th century became the Old people's home Saint Alexis. They are the only public corporations of Noyal which had more than 3.000 hab. at the beginning of the XIXe century and was gone down to 2.100 in 1954; the population grows regularly since, because of the proximity of Rennes. It increased by 700 hab. between 1999 and 2004, are 17%.

Noyal on Vilaine belonged to the Urbain District of Rennes as of the creation of this one on July 9th, 1970 and left it, although an important part of its population is opposite there, in December 2004 to join the Inter-commune Public corporation of Co-operation of Châteaugiron.

Economy

Under the Old Mode, the common one has a primarily rural economy. But it gives its name to a famous type of fabrics Noyales. These fabrics, intended for the Aerofoil of the ships, ensure a relative prosperity to all the parishes of the sector. The decline is started as of the end of the 18th century and continues at the 19th century. Many craftsmen tisserands nevertheless are still mentioned, at this period, on all the territory and especially in the southern part of the commune in Bas-Noyal. Work is completed with the farm in various parts. There do not exist specific workshops for the weaving of hemp.

The activity is dominated today by agro-alimentary companies and transport, in particular the dairy Triballat (cheeses and desserts, 400 paid) and its appendix Sojasun (in the beginning oil cakes soya bean and food of the cattle, extended today to human) and by two Gautier, haulage companies (900 paid) and Robin (280 paid) of the Breton group Calvez; two other conveyers, Bouin (50 paid) are added to it and LTS (60 paid). The other companies of weight are a center E.Leclerc (90 paid), a factory of equipment of lifting for electric lines (2MB, 80 paid), of the food trades (paid Western TEAM, 90, subsidiary of the Triballat dairies) and of agricultural machinery (Claas, 75 paid).

Priory

the Abbey of Saint-Melaine had a priory there since 1152; this priory was yielded to the Jesuits in 1604 and the college of Rennes had the pleasure of it since their expulsion until the Revolution.

The home prioral, transformed into school of girls before becoming a media library, is in the north of the church: it is a manor of second half of the 16th century, with a pretty door decorated with an archivolt in accodance with curly kale and with two carved pinnacles; one reads above this door and on the chimneys the weapons François Thomé, bishop of Saint-Malo (1574-1591) and prior of Noyal; these weapons are posed on a stick out of stake.

The manor had a dovecote and an audience. The building was denatured in 2005 by the construction of a concrete apron (baptized " the intervalle") connecting this manor to another old building (the Manor of the Mound) to be used as room of seminars of company and theater.

The building was renovated in 2005, connecting this manor to another old building (the Manor of the Mound) for the construction of " Intervalle" being used as media library, Music school, conference room and spectacles.

The Manor of the Mound

It is with the locality of the Mound that was the old house seigneuriale of Noyal. A consent of 1747 announces that the manor of Noyal was " close to the cemetery of the church paroissiale" , beside the old feudal mound. At the 11th century, the lord received the authorization of the count Eudes (brother of the duke Alain) to build a castle. In 1350, the seigniory belongs to Goeffroy de Chevaigné and its son in 1397. To the 15th century, it passes by alliance to Armel de Châteaugiron (lord of Saint-Jean-of-Laillé), by alliance in Saint-Amadour (lords of Tizé) who had it in 1433. Then, it passes by again with the latter (in Thorigné) in 1789. Having emigrated, the goods of Kéroignant de Trésel (lord of Tizé) sees its goods confiscated like national goods.

At that time, the feudal mound had already disappeared. The seigniory had a right of justice and a right of quintaine to Chaussix (which has the direction of roadway and lime kiln).

The Manor of the Mound underwent a restoration in 2005, making disappear the storeroom in appenti and connecting the manor to the Priory by a concrete building, the unit forming the arts center of Noyal;

Its door preserves an escutcheon hammered constant by two quadrupeds. The manor was sold in 1680 by Jamoays in Pocquet.” The frontage carries a beautiful limestone sundial going back to 1765

The manor, registered voter with the general inventory of the Historic buildings, always belongs to the Pocquet family.

It is registered with the additional inventory of the Historic buildings since 1994 (classified MH by decree of September 10th, 1987). It draws its surname Orcant which had the manor until 1398. The home of XVe century is put at the last style, about 1490, by Julien Thierry, Master of the currencies of Brittany and banker of the duke François II. This fortunate man bought the seigniory of Boisorcant in 1475 with the family of the EP, successors by alliance of Orcant. The manor passed by alliance to the family of Angennes, baron then marquis de Poigny until 1660.

the castle of Wood Orcan found its authenticity after its complete restoration undertaken since the years 1990 and which rehabilitated, amongst other things, the height of origin of its turns and its attic windows.
