Novotcherkassk

Novotcherkassk (in Russian Новочеркасск) is a town of Russia and the old capital of the Cosaques of the Gift. Located in the Oblast de Rostov, the city is on Right Bank of the rivers Touzlov and Aksaï. Population: 178 000 (1974), 123 000 (1959), 81 000 (1939), 52 000 (1897).

History

Novocherkassk was founded in 1805 like administrative center of the Oblast of the Gift Voisko. Until at the time, the inhabitants of the Stanitsa Tcherkassk were to give up their grounds at the time of the risings, the creation of the city allowed to dam up banks, which protected the city from the floods.

During the Russian Civil war, Novotcherkassk was the heart of the forces counter-revolutionaries of the Don. The Red Army ends up taking the city the January 7th 1920. During the Second world war, the city was occupied by the Germans of the July 24th 1942 with the February 13rd 1943. In 1962, a working rising was born having for claim a rise of the wages. The capacity Communiste repressed it in blood. This event is known under the name of " Massacre of Novotcherkassk ".

Novotcherkassk was a short moment the Episcopal see of the Greek orthodoxe church. The city has a cathedral (1904), the palate of the atamans of the Gift and monuments dedicated to Matveï Platov and Yermak Timofeyevitch.
