Novorossiisk ( Russian Новороссийск in ) is a city of the south of the Russia, on the Black Sea, in the Krai de Krasnodar. It is one of the rare cities to have received the Soviet title of " Héros" city;. Its population rises with: 281400 inhabitants in 2005. Novorossisk is the first commercial port of Russia.
During the civil war, August 26th 1918 with the March 27th 1920, Novorossiisk was the center of the white army of Dénikine.
The naval base of Novorossiisk was captured by units of the 17th German Army the September 6th 1942. But an small group of Soviet sailors succeeds in resisting in a district of the city during 225 days, until the release of the city. The February 4th 1943 the Red Army makes a success of initially an unloading close to the port of Novorossiisk, resisted a German counter-attack from April 18th to 23rd, then pushed back the German forces gradually starting from April 26th. The port of Novorossiisk was released the September 16th 1943, after one week of operations. The heroic defense of the Soviet sailors enabled them to preserve the control of bay and to prevent the use of the port by the German forces. The September 14th 1973, Novorossiisk accepted the title of Hero City.
After the dissolution of the the USSR, Russia preserved only four of the seventeen Soviet ports of the Black Sea. Novorossiisk is the only port general practitioner out of deep water of Russia on the Black Sea. Privatisé in 1992, it was modernized and developed. In 2005, with a traffic of 70,8 million tons, Novorossiisk is the 46e world port and the first wearing of Russia. It is an important port for the oil exportation rough (30 million tons per annum), but the traffic of containers suffers from the congestion of the installations.
The area of Novorossiisk is one of the principal wine-producing areas of Russia. The vineyards of Abraou-Diourso produce a table wine of quality and a famous sparkling wine.
