Novi Pazar , in Serb Cyrillic Sr НовиПазар ( the new market ), is a city and a municipality of Serbia located on the edges of the Raška, not far from the autonomous province of the Kosovo. They belong to the district of Raška. In 2002, the city counted: 54604 inhabitants and the municipality of which it is the center: 85996.

The city primarily draws its resources from agriculture and textile industry.

To 7 km of Novi Pazar is the Monastère of Sopoćani, founded in 1260. Since 1979, this monastery is registered on the Liste of the world heritage of UNESCO.

History

Until the 9th century, Novi Pazar was known under the name of Raska . It became the capital of the Serbia XII {{E}} at the 14th century. In 1456, it was taken by the Turks and became the capital of the Sandjak (district of the Ottoman Empire) éponyme. In 1879, the district was occupied by the Empire Austro-Hungarian. After the First World War, it was attached to the Yugoslavia.

Novi Pazar and literature

In the years 1930, the philologist Milman Parry, assisted of its disciple Albert Lord, studied the bards of the area of Novi Pazar.
