Novell

Novell () is a software publisher considered for his Operating system network NetWare launched in 1983 for the platform PC (before the company was called Novell Dated Systems and produced microcomputers sold with the operating system CP/M).

History

Since the beginning its existence, the company operates fusions, acquisitions and resales of other companies having a complementary activity; some examples among most significant:

1991 : fusion with DIGITAL Research, editor of the Operating system DR-DOS
1993: acquisition of Unix System Laboratories, editor of UNIX System V
1994: fusion with WordPerfect Corporation
1996: resale of WordPerfect to Corel
1996: resale partial of Unix System Laboratories with SCO
2001: fusion with Cambridge Technology Partners (consultancy)
2003: acquisition of Ximian, editor of GNOME and Mono
2003: acquisition of SuSE editor of distributions GNU/Linux
2005: launching of the project Hula (Hula project, Groupware) in Open source (project stopped in 2006)

In 2006, Novell announces that the decrease of its traditional turnover for the moment is not compensated yet by the rise to power of its activities with SuSE Linux, but that the development of its activities on the emerging markets (of which the China) allows him to consider the future without major fear.

Turnover 2004: 290 million dollars
Turnover 2005: 274 million dollars

For a few Novell years has positioned partially on the market of the free software. November 3rd, 2006, Novell signed a historical agreement with the company Microsoft bearing on three shutters: improvement of the interworking of SuSE with Microsoft Windows, a reciprocal license on the use of the patents and an agreement on the marketing and the promotion of the two solutions.
