History

It was founded in 1820, after the king João VI, in 1818, had authorized inhabitants of the canton of Freiburg (Suisse) to emigrate in Brazil. The immigrants gave the name of São João Batista de Nova Friburgo to their city. The population increased by the immigration of people coming mainly from Germany. It was, moreover, the first city of Brazil to being colonized by German on May 3rd, 1823, approximately two months before São Leopoldo (city of the state of Rio Grande C Sul). In 1831, the colony ceased existing, the Town hall dealt with the administrative load. Nova Friburgo became city with whole share on January 8th, 1890, with the decree n°34.
