Nouvelle Star

Nouvelle Star (in the past With the Research of the Nouvelle Star ) is a French emission of TV-hook produced by the company FremantleMedia and diffused on M6.

Origin and evolution

Nouvelle Star is the French variation of a format produced by FremantleMedia which was created in Great Britain under the title Pop Idol (2001) and was adapted to the the United States under the title American Idol , in Germany under the title Deutschland sucht den Superstar or in Israel under the title Kokhav Nolad . Pop Idol ceased being diffused after its second season, but about fifteen country adopted this formula which generally knew a durable success and a World Idol, bringing together the winners of all the countries, was even organized in 2003 (France did not take part in it).

In France, this emission, whose first edition saw the day in 2003, is a growing success. Jonatan Cerrada, Steeve Estatof, Myriam Abel, Christophe Willem and Julien Doré are the respective winners of seasons 1,2,3,4 and 5. Other participants, like Thierry Amiel (finalist edition 1), Amel Bent (semi-finalist edition 2), Pierrick Lilliu (finalist edition 3) or Dominique Michalon (finalist season 4) however left individual and albums. In the course of the years, it appears that many candidates of Nouvelle Star are, more still than amateurs impassioned, professionals having sometimes a rather long career behind them and cash on the emission to offer a chance to them to emerge. This evolution towards the professionalisation seems to touch all the TV-hooks, in France like abroad.

Jury and presenters

The jury is composed of French personalities of the world of the music:

the Beater Manu Katché ( Seasons 2,3,4,5 )

the singer and artistic director of BMG Varda Kakon ( Season 1 ) officiated, at the time of the first season, instead of Marianne James and Manu Katché, which was pointed out thereafter by their “yells”.

André Manoukian is the only one to resign with M6 to belong to the jury of the sixth season of the emission. In October 2007, M6 reveals the totality of this new jury made up of André Manoukian, Lio, Philippe Maneuver and Sinclair.

Benjamin Castaldi presented the first three seasons, and thirteen premiums of season 4. After the advertisement of its departure for TF1, Virginia Efira replaced it with the foot raised for last three the premiums and will continue then the presentation of the following editions.

Course of the emission

The Casting S

Pre-castings are organized by the M6 chain and the production: for arriving in front of the jury it is necessary to convince of people (qualified?) who make you pass 2 stages. Is made to purify candidates (considering in chaques cities there must be not far 8000 candidates per day), the other is done to make a selection of the " meilleurs" who will pass in front of the jury. A third phase of hearings is carried out by the jury in a certain number of cities (in 2006: Marseilles, Rennes, Paris, Lyon, Toulouse, Lille and Liege). These hearings are summarized during the first three weeks of diffusion of the emission. Each candidate has a few minutes to sing has cappella the piece which it chose and to convince sworn that it has the aptitudes to pass to the following phase. On more than 25000 candidates, 150 were selected in 2006 and 140 in 2007.

New hearings are organized over one three days period (summarized in two weeks of emission) in a large Parisian theater. The exercises are imposed and make it possible to measure the artistic quality of the candidates on precise criteria: accuracy, rate/rhythm, memorizing of a text, accelerated training of a song, capacity to be sung in trio, management of tiredness and stress, etc the first day, the candidates must arise on the scene of the theater by lines of 8 candidates to sing each one in their turn there has cappella a song of their choice. The second day, the candidates selected with the preceding test (an about sixty) must choose among two imposed songs (different for the girls and the boys), be distributed according to their tonality and then form according to their liking of the trios to present to the juries the song chosen, accompanied with the piano by Franck Sitbon. The third and last day, the selected candidates (approximately 40) must choose, among a restricted selection of songs, a title to be sung with the microphone, accompanied by a musical band. At the end of this ultimate test, only 20 participants are retained. After having refined their choice by revisionnant all the services of the latter, sworn will retain any with final only one ten for the first premium.

“Premiums”

The premiums, with the number of ten until the final, start at the sixth week of diffusion of the play and are held on line with the Pavillon Baltard.

A standard emission contains at least a performance of each candidate (two performances when they are not any more very numerous and three finally) which owe interprêter of the known songs, of passed or of the present. Each performance is evaluated and commented on by each member of the jury, which has however nothing any more but one advisory role at this stage of the emission.

The performances are intersected, according to the serviceable time, of various video sequences. Some point out the course of the candidates, showing their family, their daily life since the emission, etc Of others on lighter subjects. Lastly, of the unfortunate candidates to the emission blocked with casting are shown because they are voluntarily or not, drôles.
In addition to the individual performances, the candidates are brought to carry out collective performances which are not commented on by the jury.

During the emission, the public votes for its favorite candidates, by telephone or SMS (paying numbers). At the end of the evening, each week, the candidate who obtained less votes is eliminated from the competition (there can be several candidates eliminated at the time of very first the premiums). It should be noted that the course of the votes of Nouvelle Star is different from that of American Idol which is used to him as model. In France, the eliminated candidate is announced at the end of the emission (by Maître Nadjar, usher), while in the American version of the emission he is announced only after, at the conclusion one period of vote concentrated during the two hours which follows the emission.

Notes on the edition 2006

Because of a data-processing bug, the calculation of the voices of the first premium was distorted and eliminated from the March 29th were reinstated. All the money piled up by the votes at the time of this premium was completely transferred with the Sidaction.

The journalists of the television page of the newspaper Libération and sworn André Manoukian deliver themselves during this edition to an exchange of message coded to the antenna, comprehensible only by the readers of the newspaper.

After having announced this season like the last, the four members of the jury finally agreed to give cover for a springtide.

Starting from the emission of the May 24th 2006, Virginia Efira replaces Benjamin Castaldi. According to Benjamin Castaldi, who could have finished the season, it is about a “punitive” measurement on behalf of the chain, after Castaldi announced (later that the law authorized there) by usher which it wished to change chain to the re-entry.
