History

The origin of the newspaper is the political, economic and literary Observer , weekly magazine of 24 pages drawn, as of the first publication on April 13rd, 1950, with 20.000 specimens. It was founded by the old resistant ones, Gilles Martinet of the AFP, Roger Stephan, Claude Bourdet and Hector de Galard of Combat . It becomes today the Observer in 1953 then France Observer in 1954. In France according to war, impregnated of the spirit of the resistance of left, France Observer is affirmed like a polemical newspaper, proposing the need for giving their independence to the colonies, denouncing the scandals and compromisings, torture in Algeria. The newspaper draws with 100.000 specimens.

Beginning 1964, France Observer fails because of financial problems. Claude Perdriel, an industrialist impassioned by the press, and Jean Daniel, journalist and writer, decides to start again the weekly magazine which becomes Nouvel Observateur on November 19th, 1964.

The editorial line of the magazine, development by thinkers such as Jean Daniel, Maurice Clavel or Gilles Trip hammer, is the one long period old heiress of “opposition” to the French governments of center-right and preserves a clear sensitivity “of left”.

In 1974, familiarly called the Nouvel Obs , Nouvel Observateur draws with 400.000 specimens. The reason of this success is due above all to its capacity to seize the spirit of time: it is representative of the evolution of manners and reveals with the general public the many sociocultural currents of the years post-68.

In 1984, following new financial problems, Claude Perdriel increases the capital of the Nouvel Observateur and becomes the majority shareholder about it. New journalists are committed (Claude Weill, Olivier Peretier, Jean-Paul Mari…) and the concept of the newspaper is modified. Nouvel Observateur approaches the style " news magazine" , revival the idea of the reports and develops the facts of companies. The supplement Obs of Paris brings a glance on the cultural life of the capital while an economic book is integrated into the magazine starting from 1985.

In September 1993, a supplement television makes its appearance, TéléCinéObs , directed by Richard Cannavo and diffused in Paris and in province. It becomes national in January 1994. In 1995, Nouvel Observateur becomes the first French news magazine in front of the Express train .

In 1999, nouvelobs.com, site of information uninterrupted on Internet are launched by Patrick Fiole (drafting as a chief) and Christina Sourieau (direction of the Electronic editions). A dedicated team journalists is installation. It is the interactive Nouvelobs.

In 2003, the Parisian supplement, whose Guillaume Malaurie is editor association, is renamed Paris Obs . Nouvel Observateur obtains regional supplements directed by Patrick Fiole.

The direction of the magazine is ensured by Jean Daniel and the direction of the drafting by Guillaume Malaurie and Michel Labro, who succeeded in December 2006 Laurent Joffrin after his return to Libération .
