History

According to the official site of the University of Notre Dame, the origins of the nickname of the team, Fighting Irish , are not clearly established. Two anecdotes are evoked. First in 1899 takes place. At the beginning of second half of a Notre Dame match - Northwestern, the unfavourable supporters would have entonné the following song: “Kill the Fighting Irish, kill the Fighting Irish”. The other history is held in 1909. During a Notre Dame match - Michigan, a player would have shouted since the key: “What' S the matter with you guys? You' Re all Irish and you' Re not fighting worth has lick. ” (that is what arrives to you the guy? You all are Irish and you do not fight!). Very badly engaged, the part is finally gained by Notre Dame and the press titrates the following day on the victory of “Fighting Irish”.

Notre Dame includes/understands a team of American football since 1879 and evolves/moves with the more university high level since then. 13 championships national and 7 Heisman Trophy were in particular gained by the players of Notre Dame.

The male team of Basket-ball took part once in the Final Furnace in 1978 while the female team gained the national title in 2001.

The male team of Hockey evolves/moves in Central Collegiate Hockey Association. The hockeyeurs play their home matches with the Joyce Center Rink (2 667 places).

After having taken part in its first Bowl Range in 1925 (season 1924), Notre Dame then agreed to take share with the bowls of end of season only since 1969.
