Notre-Dame of the Pains

Notre-Dame of the Pains (also called Notre-Dame of the Mercy, Notre-Dame of Soledade, Notre-Dame of the Anguishes, Notre-Dame of the Tears, Notre-Dame of the Seven Pains, Notre-Dame of the Martyrdom or Notre-Dame of Pranto, and called upon in Latin like Beata Maria Virgo Perdolens , or MATER Dolorosa ) is one of the titles by which the Catholic church venerates the Virgin Mary. With the Portugal this designation is particularly widespread.

History

The worship with the MATER Dolorosa appears officially in 1221, with the Monastery of Schönau, in Germany. In 1239, in the diocese of Florence in Italy, the Order of Servites of Marie ( Ordo Servita ) fixes the festival of Notre-Dame of the pains at September 15th. This title owes its name with the seven traditional Pains of the Virgin Mary:

  • the prophecy of Simeon on Jesus (LLC, 2,34-35)
  • the escape of the Holy Family in Egypt (Chechmate, 2,13-21)
  • the disappearance of Jesus during three days with the temple (LLC, 2,41-51)
  • the meeting of Marie and Jesus on the via dolorosa (LLC, 23,27-31)
  • Marie contemplating the suffering and the death of Jesus on the Cross (Jn, 19,25-27)
  • Marie accommodates her son died in his arms at the time of the Deposition
  • Marie gives up the body of her son at the time of the setting to the tomb.

Patronages

Notre Dame of the pains is thus venerated on September 15th. It is this term which the Slovakia, the American State of the the Mississippi and the Italian communes of Accumoli, Ressort di Bari, Paroldo and Villanova Mondovì, chose like patronage.

To Portugal, a great number of parishes are devoted to the one of the terms of the mother of the pains. (for example: Poço C Canto)

Art

The seven pains of the Virgin Mary are an iconographic subject running in medieval art and Rebirth. The Pietà, in particular, represent the sixth pain.

The Stabat MATER , of XIIIe century, is entirely devoted to the pains of the Virgin Mary. He is still sung today little before Easter, during the act of piety of the Chemin of cross
