Notre-Dame of Clearness

Notre-Dame of Clearness ( Itron Varied rear Sklaerder , in Breton) is the name given to a vault dedicated to the Virgin Mary, located on a height of the commune of Perros-Guirec in Coast-in Armor (Brittany).

History

Its origin

This vault was built at the 15th century in Ex-voto following an unhoped-for rescue.

Of return of a cruising on the English coast, the marquis de Barac' H was surprised, behind the Seven-Islands by a fog so thick which it was impossible to move. The wind and the currents carried it on the reefs, where it was likely to be crushed. With knees on the bridge of its boat, he requested the Virgin Mary to save it like his crew, promising the construction of a vault. At this time, an sun ray bored the fog over the rocks of Ploumanac' H showing him the coast. Thus it could reach without encumbers the port of Perros-Guirec. In 1445, faithful to its wish, it made build the vault who took the name of Our-Lady-of-the-Clearness .

Crowning of the Virgin

In August 1944, the American fortesses were to bombard the fortified camp from Mez Gouez, center of detection radar of the allied planes protected by 600 German soldiers, with less than 200 m of the vault. The Germans had pointed their guns on the town of Perros-Guirec downwards, threatening to bombard the city with the least attack. During three days of at a stretch, the 7,8 and August 9th, the fortresses flew over the fortified camp but per same hour a fog recovered the coast and the planes could not release their bombs. The August 10th, the Germans went without resistance. To thank the Virgin for protection that it had ensured them, Perrosiens crowned the statue of Notre-Dame of Clearness the August 15th 1946.

The crowns of the Virgin and the Jesus Child were molten thanks to gold drawn from jewels given by living commune.

The building

It is built out of pink granite drawn from the close ground. The tower is 16th century. The covered way comes from the old castle of Ploumanac' H dismantled in 1594. The interior way of cross is the work of the painter Maurice Denis.

The vault was classified historic building in 1907. It contains a statue of the Virgin holding the Jesus Child on an arm.

Since its construction, a small borough developed: the borough of the Clearness , which in particular profited from the presence of the most important careers of pink Granite of France, careers of Clearness.

Forgiveness

Every year, the day of the August 15th, is held large a forgiveness on the close hillock, with mass and procession of the statue of the Virgin. Forgiveness is preceded the day before at the evening by a tantad (bonfire, into Breton).
