Notre-Dame church of Taur
According to the legend, the Notre-Dame church of Taur , with Toulouse, was built at the exact place where the body of Saint Saturnin was detached from the bull which trailed it behind him. The church is located in the Street of Taur between the Place of Capitole and the Basilique Saint-Sernin. The Notre-Dame church of Taur is classified.
History of the church
Saint-Saturnin was the first bishop of Toulouse. An oratory was first of all installed for the pilgrims on the exact place of its death.The relics of the saint were kept until in 402, date on which they were transferred in large pump to the Basilique Saint-Sernin, which bears the faded name of Saint-Saturnin. In spite of the 150 years of the body, the legend tells that crowd appreciated the “ soft effluves ” of the remainders of Saturnin Saint. According to Rome, it is one of the features characteristic of a saint.
The church that we know was built on the oratory in XIVe century. The virgin represented is Notre-Dame of the Ramparts, moved Place Villenouvelle (current Place Wilson) in 1783.
Structure of the church
The outside of this church is very impressive. Enchased in the alignment of the houses, the frontage is a large brick wall which makes think of a fortress, and entirely masks the remainder of the building. The wall-belfry, model for the wall-belfries of the area, shelters a Carillon of 13 bells.The frontage giving on the street of Taur dates from the 14th century-16th century and falls under the tradition of the southernmost Gothic.
Treasures of the church
The interior contains also classified treasures:- a statue of Notre-Dame of the Rampart or Delivery or good Help dating from the 16th century.
- a painting of Bénézet dating from the 19th century above the central furnace bridge represents the martyrdom of Saturnin Saint.
- a painting of Bénézet representing the death of Joseph Saint dating from the 19th century.
- a genealogy of Jacob in 38 figures dating from the 14th century.
Organ
The church also shelters a Orgue of 40 plays (distributed on 3 keyboards and pedals) built in 1878 by the house Puget.
