Not exclamation
A not of exclamation , which was also called not admiration, is a Signe of Ponctuation which is put at the end of an exclamative sentence, in the place of the not.
Use
The Phrase which a point of exclamation finishes can is to be a true exclamation (“Wouah! ”), an order (“Stop is to be! ”), or to underline a remarkable fact (“This animal is really gigantic! ”). A exclamative sentence or a Interjection always ends in a point of exclamation.
In French, it is of use to place a space (or more exactly a space fine) before the point of exclamation. It is not the case in all the Langue S, like, for example, in English where the point of exclamation is placed directly after the last letter of the sentence. The point of exclamation is followed by a space.
Origins
This symbol would come from the exclamation of joy “io” in Latin, which was shortened of a I above a O .
Employment
In the proper names
The use of the point of exclamation is current in the Publicité. Certain marks even included the punctuation mark in their names (for example, the Search engine Yahoo! or television game Jeopardy!).
Surprisingly, certain cities have a point of exclamation in their names: Westward Ho! with the the United Kingdom, named according to the novel of Charles Kingsley, and Saint-Louis-of-ha! Ha! with the Canada.
One will also note the American group of music !!!. The French rock group Téléphone, at its beginnings, was also called “! ”.
In the foreign languages
In certain languages, as in Spanish since the 18th century, the exclamative sentence begins with a not exclamation reversed (¡) and ends in a conventional point of exclamation (the same rule exists for the interrogative sentence with the question mark). However, this orthographical convention is sometimes ignored in fast typewriting or because the reversed character does not exist on the keyboards usually used.
The point of exclamation is also used in Chinese, Korean and Japanese.
Descriptive
The point of exclamation is also used to announce a danger. One sees it in particular on panels of Road signs in Europe, where it is inside a red triangle. The not of exclamation reversed (¡) corresponds to the character Unicode 161 (0x00A1) and can be written thanks to the combination ALT + 429.
The symbol “! ” is also employed in various computer programming languages, in particular to represent a logical negation (for example: “Has! = B” means “has is not equal to B”).
