Norway pine of the basin of Arcachon
See also: Norway pine
The Norway pine is a typical boat of the Bassin of Arcachon and littoral Gascon: long, narrow, with before very raised, it is generally in Bois (pine of the Landes) and flat-bottomed. Going to the veil ( pinassotte or tillole ) or to the Driving , it found a great popularity today.
Etymology
It is discussed enough: This Romance word Gascon pinaça , Spanish pinaza , Italian pinaccia , English pinnace is generally analyzed by a Latin derivative *pinacea being able to mean “in board of pine”. One will not confuse it with the Catalan pinassa “large pine” applicable to the black pine pinus will negra .One will also compare it with the words pinche or Pinque (Bateau flat-bottomed), of the Dutch pinck .
Thillole or tillole , related with stripped (Galician boat ), bast (Breton) would come from the Scandinavian tilja (board).
Motorization
This one intervenes massively after the years 1905 and 1906, initially for the most fortunate residents then until in 1913 for almost the totality of the Norway pines of fishing of Arcachon. It would be Auguste Bert, the inventor of the veil vat which would have built the first Norway pines with engine. Running then on the paraffin oil, one will employ the name of pétroleuses for these Norway pines whose size tends to grow more and more. They will reach a dozen meters for some, will embark from eight to twelve men like three to five dory for fishing with the Sardine and will be partially Pontée S.
Regattas of Norway pines
As on all the French coasts, the sailor-fishermen generally devoted themselves to regattas the local feastday. The regattas of Norway pines with veil between ostréculteurs and sailor-fishermen lasted until in 1962 because the number of participants was not sufficient any more. Only 5 or 6 Norway pines took part.
From 1982, buildings give in state of the abandoned Norway pines (the Beautiful one, Goudurix, Africa, the Key of the hearts). Then in 1985, a new Norway pine is built by building site RABA. This same year, the friendly one of the pinasseyre was born and proposes to gather all the existing Norway pines and to build news of them. In 1986, Arcachon order four new Norway pines which will have the name of the four parishes of the locality. The fleet is aujurd' today made up of 32 boats of which 22 take part in the competitions.
Each year, the regattas of summer are organized in the various villages of the Bassin of Arcachon.
The navigation of the Norway pines is a sporting navigation. Indeed, all the maneouvres are made with the hand without Poulie nor Palan and with each tacking, the sail is lowered, passed on the other armor and is returned, the mast raised and inclined with the wind.
The Mât is not stayed and holds only in two points: by the rope of the veil and its root.
