Northrop N-1M
The Northrop N-1M is one of the first hang-gliders built and is the predecessor of the Northrop N-9M and the Northrop YB-35.
Design
The N-1M , which is the first hang-glider produced with the the United States, was developed in 1939 and 1940 and stole for the first time the July 3rd 1940 starting from Baker Dry Lake in California. Unstable and under-motorized, but of a healthy design, the N-1M allowed the development by Northrop of its other hang-gliders. Jack Northrop began the construction of its hang-gliders while taking as a starting point the work of the brothers Horten on their Planeur S before the war in Germany. The plane was given to the United States Army Air Forces in 1945 and is now exposed to the National Air and Space Museum.
