North Stars of Minnesota

The North Stars of Minnesota are old a frankness from Hockey which evolved/moved in the National league of hockey of 1967 with 1993. At the end of this last season, the team was transferred to Dallas to become the Stars of Dallas. Its colors, for the major part of its history, were the green, gold, the white and the black.

Its name comes to him from the currency of the Minnesota: “ North Star State ” (the state of star of north).

The team played her local matches in the skating rink Metropolitan Sports Center of Mineapolis. She never gained the Coupe Stanley but was finalist in 1981 and 1991. Their traditional rivals were the Blackhawks of Chicago, just as (but to a lesser extent) the Red Wings de Détroit and the Blues of Saint-Louis.

History

Beginnings

In 1967, the National league of hockey, after 25 seasons with only six franknesses, decides to double the number of team and before the beginning of the season, a expansion takes place and the Minnesota, known for its attraction for hockey, receives one of the six new teams.

Carried out by an effective executive team, the new team plays her matches in the skating rink of the Metropolitan Sports Center in the town of Bloomington. The first teams rest on both guards Lorne " Gump" Worsley and Cesare Maniago whereas the defender Ted Harris is the first high-speed motorboat of the team of North Stars. The other players high-speed motorboats are called then: Bill Goldsworthy, Barry Gibbs, Jude Drouin, J.P. Parise, Danny Grant or Refusals Hextall.

As of their first season, North Stars know a tragedy when on January 13rd the attacker Bill Masterton at the time of a match against the Seals d' Okland receives a Mise in failure by Ron Harris. Masterton not carrying a helmet and falling behind, its head comes to type the ice violently plunging it in a coma which it will not leave. He dies two days later at the 29 years age. It is about the first death of the LNH due to a direct consequence of a match. In homage, North Stars decide that more no player will never carry number 19 of Masterton and as of the following season, the LNH decides to give each year the Trophée Bill Masterton to the player of the season showing greatest sporting courage and most beautiful perseverance.

Seasons in teeth of saw

At the beginning of the Years 1970, whereas Worsley and Harris took their retirement, North Stars start to have difficulties in the play missing rather often the qualification for the eliminatory series. Despite everything in 1978, the team is repurchased by the brothers Gordon and George Gund, which is then owner of another frankness from the LNH, the Barons de Cleveland. The Gund brothers then received the exceptional authorization to amalgamate the franknesses and decide to keep the name of North Stars. Thus some players of quality will join North Stars of which the guard Gilles Meloche and also the two attackers Al Macadam and Mike Fidler.

Moreover in 1978 at the time of the fishing out amateur, North Stars choose in first fishing out Bobby Smith and decide to assign it to the American Ligue hockey where it will gain the Coupe Calder with the of. The seasons of North Stars are increasingly good and they reach for the first time of their history the final of the series 1981. Unfortunately the team goes loses finally against the Islanders of New York which begin their formidable dynasty.

Unfortunately, after this beautiful season, the black years return and at the end of the Années 1980, North Stars carry out their best choice of fishing out by choosing Mike Modano in 1988. Despite everything, the not following public, the frankness goes badly financially and of the rumors send the team in the area of San Francisco, against the wishes of official of the league.

Fusion then the fall

A compromise is found before the beginning of the season 1990-91, with the promise of a new expansion of the LNH for the following season and the Gund brothers receiving a new frankness which will be formed starting from a 1991: the team will be called the Sharks de San Jose.

In same time, the group of investors which wished to take along the team in bay of San Francisco repurchases the frankness for approximately 38,1 million dollars. The group is composed of Howard Baldwin, Morris Belzberg and Norman Green, this last having with him only 51% of share in the frankness then 75% with the departure from Baldwin. In October 1990, finally Green has 100% of the shares of the team after the departure of Belzberg.

At the time of this season 1990-91, even if North Stars carry out a very average course, they are qualified for the eliminatory series. They first of all face the Blackhawks of Chicago then the Blues of Saint-Louis. The two teams are isolated in six matches each one whereas they were the two best teams of the regular season. Finally of the conference, North Stars face the champions titrates of it, the Oilers d' Edmonton. The latter are inclined in five matches and for the second time of her history, the team arrives at the finale of the Coupe Stanley. The adversary is then the Penguins de Pittsburgh whose manpower 1990-91 is carried out by Mario Lemieux. North Stars then will gain two of the first three matches but at the time of the following matches, they are exceeded by Penguins and at the time of the sixth and last match, Penguins gain on the score of 8 goals to 0. It is the largest difference between two teams at the time of a match of the finale of the Stanley Cut since the 23 to 2 inflicted by the Senators d' Ottawa with the Nuggets of Dawson City in 1905. This reverse is the fatal blow for North Stars and their Green owner is driven back more and more by the problems (financial, scandal of sexual harassment,…) and finally in 1993, the frankness moves with the Texas and takes the name of Stars of Dallas.

At the dawn of the season 2007-08, Mike Modano always plays for the frankness from the Stars (and it is the last North Stars always playing for the frankness) and it is one of the last three players of the LNH to have carried the white, green shirt and gold of North Stars (two others being Derian Hatcher and Richard Matvichuk).
