The North Queensland Cowboys are an Australian team of Rugby to XIII, based with Townsville in the North of the Queensland, disputing the Australian championship of NRL.

History

The name and the colors of the Cowboys were adopted following a vote near the public. One of the difficulties of the club, at its beginnings, is to deal with the competition of powerful the Brisbane Broncos which attract the best players. The first two seasons are marked by instability. In only two years, the Cowboys will see following one another 7 different captains.

In 1997, the Cowboys choose to play the dissenting championship of the Super League. It finish for the second time in three years, the last of the championship.

In 1998, the ARL and the Super League amalgamate to become the NRL. Although the results are not with go of 1998 until in 2003, the public of the Cowboys is faithful and increasingly numerous.

In 2004, the Cowboys finish in the seventh place of the championship and qualify themselves for the first time of its history for the play-offs. After having beaten the Canterbury Bulldogs and Brisbane Broncos, they fail the doors of the finale vis-a-vis the Sydney Roosters.

On the impetus of 2004, the Cowboys reach in 2005, the finale of the championship vis-a-vis the Wests Tigers. The latter easily gain the match over the score from 30 to 16.
