North American B-25 Mitchell was one of best the average bomber of the world second geurre. It began its career with a brilliant deed (Raid on Tokyo), and becomes the nightmare of the Japanese Navy with its gun of 75mm (Version G and H).

Design

B-25 Mitchell is a average bomber whose performances of flight were appreciated by USAAF. Indeed this apparatus was equipped with a great handiness and a satisfactory speed for the missions which were assigned to him. Of an incredible effectiveness, it was the apparatus of bombardment Bimoteur more produced by the aeronautical factories during the war. Approximately 9  800 planes were delivered of which 2  600 were at disposal of the American fleet. Its qualities were quickly made know and RAF ordered some to replace the Boston bombers of the LORRAINE Escadrille in 1944.

Its speed reached 442km/h with 4  000 m of Altitude.

Engagements

  • the most famous engagement of B-25 Mitchell was the raid of the colonel Doolittle. It was supposed to attack Tōkyō in reprisals with the attack of Pearl Harbor, the December 7th 1941.

  • One finds B-25 on all the theaters of operation, in particular in the strategic forces: 9th USAAF (based in England) and 12th USAAF (based in North Africa then in the south of the Italy, the Sardinia and the Corsica ).

The B25j version could have 4 machine-guns of gauge 0,50 (12,7 mm) around the glazed nose.

After the war

Already during the war, the first versions of Mitchell (has, B, C) were converted into apparatuses of drive (AT-24). After the war of many B-25 were withdraw first lines. Some rejoinirent the base of Yuma (Arizona) or they were assign to the drive with the bombardment without visibility (TB-25). Others were converted into apparatuses of fast transport intend to the officers of high ranking (CB-25).

A film star

None another plane which B-25 Mitchell did not have also a intence career in cinema industry.

Shortly after the raid on Tokyo a film was carried out, telling planning, the execution of the raid (Thirty second on Tokyo). Of B-25 were employed for the catch of air sight for film the Battle of England. In fact the versions has nose panes explain why cinema industry called upon B-25, especially at the time of catch seen in full sky.
