North-American plan of classification

The plane of North-American numbering (NANP) is a system of integrated telephone numbering common to nineteen countries.

AT&T developed this plan of numbering in 1947 to simplify and facilitate the local calls and long-distance. Its implementation began in 1951.

The International union of telecommunications (UIT) allotted the code country “1” to zone NANP. The NANP follows the E.164 recommendation which fixes the international standards as regards telephone plans of numbering.

Zone 1

Classification

Numbers NANP have ten digits consisting of:

  • a local prefix with three digits (called area code), allotted by the plan of local numbering (NPA)

  • and a number of subscriber to seven digits.

The format of the numbers thus arises generally in the following form:

where NR represents a figure from 2 to 9, and X a figure from 0 to 9.

The following numbers are reserved for:

  • 911 for the urgencies (police force, ambulance, fireman)

  • 411 for the assistance directory
  • 611 for the service of repair
  • 711 for the deaf people
