Nornes

Nornes of the Scandinavian Mythologie is three women of the name of Urd (representing the past), Verdandi (present) and Skuld (future). (Skuld is also the name of one of the Valkyrie S.)

General information

Nornes live under the protection of large the Yggdrasil, the tree world in the center of the cosmos where they weave the great tapestry of the Destin S. Each human life (or divine) is symbolized by a wire of their ball, and the length of each wire represents the duration of this life.

Thus, all is preset within the meaning of Nornes: even the Gods have their own wire, although Nornes do not let them see it. The distinct opinion of the Gods, on the fact even as a capacity exists apart from their control and the implications which result from this - they are mortals them also - are the major topics of the literature on Scandinavian mythology.

Völuspá (2nd part):

From here came the girls
Savantes in all things,
Three, coming from the sea,
which extends under the tree;
One is called Urd,
Verdandi the other
- they engraved sticks -
third is Skuld:
They made the laws
They fixed the lives
sons of man

Bringing together

They approach by certain aspects the Moires, or Parques mythology gréco - Roman. They are indeed usually described under the features of “ropemaking machines of destinies”, but Nornes are rather represented like young women. Moreover, the analogy of weaving is reinforced in Scandinavian mythology by the Anglo-Saxon concept of Wyrd.

The term Norne is sometimes used, always in Scandinavian mythology, to indicate magic, beneficial or malefic creatures, which take care of the course of the life of the men. Nornes beneficial lavish happiness, others more malfaisantes work a painful destiny. These Nornes can be various origins: Adzes, Elf S or girls of Dvalin the dwarf .
