Norman Lebrecht

Norman Lebrecht , born in London the July 11th 1948, is a writer, and and art critic British Classical music. He is also editor associated with the Evening Standard since 2002 and presents the Lebrecht.live emission on BBC Radio operator 3.

Its weekly chronicle, published in the Standard Evening and on the site Scena Musical , is sometimes criticized as being provocante but its predictions on the decline of the classical music are universally recognized and several of its books are international successes which were translated into 16 languages.

  • Maestro (1991) recalls the history of the profession of Leader as of the end of the 19th century, when this one was still just, until our days when it would be corrupted by the capacity, the money and the celebrity.

  • When the Music Stops (American title: Who Killed Classical Music , 1997) is the first historical document on the classical music which predicts the decline of the industry of the disc.
  • Maestros, Masterpieces and Madness (American title: The Life and Death off Classical Music , 2007) is the account of the evolution of this industry, presented with criticisms and the analyzes of the 100 essential discs and the 20 worse recordings.

He wrote on Gustav Mahler (in particular in Mahler Remembered , 1987) and on the modern music in The Complete Companion to 20th Century Music (2000). He is also the founder and the editor of biographies of Compositeurs of the 20th century published by Phaidon.

Its first novel The Song off Names , appeared in 2001, is the history of two boys living in London during the Second world war; it gained prestigious Whitbread Award.

Its other books include The Book off Musical Anecdotes (1985), Music in London (1992) and Covent Garden: The Untold Story (2000).
