Norman Cohn

Norman Rufus Hake Cohn , (born the January 12th 1915 with London, the United Kingdom and dead the July 31st 2007), is a Historien Britannique. He was professor emeritus Astor-Wolfson (Astor-Wolfson Professor off History) with the Université of Sussex where he directed during several years an international research project on the Génocide.

Biography

Born in a Jewish family with London, it makes its studies with the Gresham' S School and the college Christ Church of Oxford. It obtained its doctorate (Ph.D.) with the Université of Glasgow. Very early, it starts to teach and translates legends Siberia born of Anton Schefner which it publishes in 1936. During the Second world war, it joint rows of the British army.

In 1957, it is made known by the publication of Pursuit off the Millenium , a reference book on the history of the Millénarisme which will be republished and increased several times.

From 1960 to 1963, he is French professor to the Université of Durham; from 1966 to 1973, he is full professor at the University of Sussex and of 1974 to 1980, he is professor of history, holder of the Astor-Wolfson pulpit. He worked with a research project entitled " Past Future: In History off Expectation in the World" Western; in Netherlands Institute for Advanced Studiy in the humanities and Social Science (DENIED) (September 1st, 1975 - July 31st, 1976).

In 1967, it publishes an important work on the Protocoles of Wise of Sion which recalls the genesis of this false lampoon Antisémite and analyzes of them the Plagiat S of an ignored text of Maurice Jolly. Cohn took part in various denunciation campaigns of Mythe S and Canular S histories, or on the medieval Sorcellerie, in particular against Margaret Murray. It contributed to the foundation of the Center for Genocide Studies with the Université Concordia of Montreal (Quebec, Canada).

It held various academic places before its nomination at the University of Sussex in 1963. Its work approaches those of Leon Poliakov which worked with him in Colombus Center, an interdisciplinary research center on the Persécution S and the Extermination S. In 1978, it was elected member of the British Academy (British Academy).

Influence

In France, work of Cohn influenced in particular the Philosophe and historian of the ideas Pierre-André Taguieff which dedicated to him one of its last works: the Imaginary one of the world plot. Aspects of a modern myth (Paris, Thousand and One Nights, 2006).
