Norðoyatunnilin
With 6.300 meters, the Norðoyatunnilin ( the tunnel of the islands of North ) is the longest tunnel of the Faroe Islands. It connects the town of Leirvík on the island of Eysturoy to the town of Klaksvík on the island of Borðoy, while passing under the strait Leirvíksfjørður.
Norðoyatunnilin is a road tunnel made up of single tubes bidirectional. Its construction was completed in April 2006, for an official unveiling on April 29th, 2006.
The construction project of a tunnel connecting the island of Eysturoy to the island of Borðoy are not new. In 1988, Landsverkfrøðingurin (a famous local engineer) carried out a certain number of studies of seismicity in Leirvíksfjørður (the strait between the two islands). One year earlier, an engineer had prepared a global level showing various sites being able to accommodate a tunnel. Other studies undertaken into 1988 confirmed that this project of tunnel could be regarded as economically viable. Fifteen years after the beginning of the first study, the building work started. The tunnel goes down to a depth 150 meters below the sea level. The maximum slope is of approximately 6 percent.
