Nonsyllabic vowel

A nonsyllabic vowel is a sound of the type Voyelle which is not the core of a Syllabe or of a more.

Certain languages as the English lays out of a great number of Diphtongue S. the simplest transcription consists in noting them like consonants spirantes, such as eye or cow . However, the phonetists often make the objection that the final segments of these diphthongues are purely vocalic, and thus that the symbols and are inappropriate; indeed, constriction of the consonants or in yes or wall is absent in a nonsyllabic vowel.

Moreover, there exist languages for which a sequence as is a diphthong, but differs from the diphthong; the symbol cannot obviously be used for these two sequences. In such cases, the nonsyllabic Diacritique of the International Phonetic Alphabet can be used. In addition to the transcription of phonemic contrasts like vs , it allows a finer transcription of the normal diphthongs. For example, the diphthong of the English word bay can be transcribed instead of.

One can note that in practice, as with the many diacritic ones, the symbol is often omitted in the transcription, so that bay is transcribed (or even, or). However, it is necessary to know the phonology of the language if one wants to include/understand the significance of such transcriptions.
