Nonround former pre-closed vowel

The former lower pre-closed vowel nonround is a vowel used in certain languages. Its symbol in the International Phonetic Alphabet is, and its equivalent in symbol X-SAMPA is I.

The API symbol is a I in small capital letter. Before 1989, the API symbol was the Latin letter iota (ɩ).

Characteristics

  • Its Degré of aperture is high lower, which means that the position of the language is close to that of a high vowel, but slightly less less tightened.
  • Its Joint is former, which means that the language is placed as far as possible in front of the mouth.
  • Its Caractère of roundness is nonround, which means that the lips are not round.
