Nona Gaprindashvili

Nona Terentievna Gaprindashvili (May 3rd 1941 with Zougdidi, Georgia) is a Soviet player of failures , of origin georgienne.

In 1961, at the 20 years age, it gains the tournament of the candidates and faces world title concerned, the Russian Elisabeth Bykova. She carries it easily (+7 -0 =4) and becomes world champion female.

She will defend her title victoriously by beating Alla Kushnir by three times into 1965,1969 and 1972, then Nana Alexandria in 1975. She outclasses her generation, but loses finally her title in 1978 against Maia Tchibourdanidzé (+2 -4 =9).

During its career, it takes part in male tournaments, obtaining the first place equal with the tournaments of Hastings (1964) and of Lone Pine (1977). She is the first woman has to have been Grand female Master 1962), then international Large-Master (1978).
