History of the working city Menier
Since 1825, Jean-Antoine Brutus Menier, founder of the dynasty of industrialists of the same name, decides to move its factory of medicinal products, then located in full district of the Marais at Paris, on the edges of the Marne, in Noisiel, on the site of an old mill. In 1867, his/her son, Emile-Justin Menier, decide to center his factory on the production of chocolate. It is also the moment of the rise of the production and manpower of the company which pass from 50 workmen in 1856 to 325 in 1867. This growth is followed of a total reorganization of the manufacturing process within the factory. New buildings are built, in particular by the architect Jules Saulnier, all along the Marne, involving disappearance, after its repurchase of the old village. It is thus between 1860 and 1874 that the factory takes its current aspect, symbolized by the central mill.Following his accession with the town hall in 1871 and his many land acquisitions, Emile-Justin Menier is entirely Master of the communal destinies. In 1874, near the factory, it launches the construction of 66 houses and a school complex. For that, the Menier family visits models of cities in England and takes also example on the cities of Mulhouse.
Each house in edge of street is composed of two residences independent of 64 m ² each one, including/understanding two rooms, a kitchen and a stay, as well as a garden of 300 m ² contiguous, intended for the kitchen garden, to supplement the incomes of the family. The running water does not arrive until in housing but of the terminals fountains are installed in the streets every 45 meters. Houses in heart of piece gather as for them 4 residences and as many garden-kitchen gardens. Only the houses of angles, more cossues, larger and reserved to the employees and to engineers, have toilets. The residences are rented exclusively with the personnel of the factory which cannot become owner about it. By leaving his employment, the employee must leave his dwelling. The amount of the rent is the equivalent from two to six day's works, according to the rank of the employee. 85 houses are added until 1911. On the whole, these are 311 residences which are built covering a space of 20 hectares.
The great priority is given to hygiene and health. The provision of the houses in quincunx allows a better air circulation and light. Public baths are installed near the factory just as laundrettes, an doctor's office for two doctors and a pharmacist. A very great number of equipment, properties of the factory, supplements this device: stores of provisioning (property of Menier until 1912), a refectory for the unmarried workmen, two coffee-hotel-restaurants, a school complex for girls and boys, an old people's home and the town hall.
By the plan even of her city, the Menier family shows her political commitments and ideological. The school, symbol of the rise in the working condition, is thus located at the center of the principal place of the city, while the church - whose industrialist however financed construction - is left outside the new city. Nevertheless, it is before all the factory which remains the center of the city and around which all is organized. The figure of the owner is central as the inauguration in 1898 of the statue of Emile-Justin Menier shows it, in front of the schools. In 1963, the factory, in liquidation, yields the residences, then in bad condition, with a promoter who resells them with the unit. Buildings of the chocolate factory, whose the very beautiful one and coloured mill (the first construction in the world with metal structure connects), belong today to Nestlé, which made of it the seat of its division France. The Farm of the Bush, which was the farm of the Menier family and the factories, is a national arts center today (See the site).
Religious heritage
The Saint M3edard's Day church, of Romance style and a capacity of approximately 200 faithful, is located not far from the Menier city. The religious offices are always celebrated there.
