History

Several origins of the name are proposed:
  • Novigentum , “people new”, i.e. prisoners brought back by the Roman armies.
  • Nov. indicates fatty or soaked grounds.
  • Novientum which is the Gallic equivalent of Villeneuve medieval.

From its position at the edge of a river, the Marne, and forest, Nogent-sur-Marne is a place favourable with the creation of an agglomeration, thus a settlement of the Gallo-Roman time is referred at this place.

A palate mérovingien of Chilpéric Ier would have been located at Nogent-sur-Marne. In 581, Gregoire de Tours quotes Novigentum like preferred residence of the king.

Fields are made up with the Moyen-âge:

  • the Castle of Pleasure, built at the 13th century, which accommodates Charles V and Jeanne de Bourbon in 1375. The only vestige which remains about it is a house of the current private hospital, 30 rue de Plaisance, as well as the bottom of the enclosing wall of the gardens.
  • the castle of Beauté-sur-Marne, of the 14th century, is a place of royal stay. At the 15th century, Charles VII the offer with its favorite Agnes Sorel, which will become thus Dame of Beauty. It is the cardinal of Richelieu which will make it shave in 1626.

As of the 17th century, whereas the rural population is made up of a majority of vine growers and farmers, the middle-class discovers the charms of the country and settles in Nogent; inter alia:

  • Jean-Antoine Watteau, the painter who comes to pass to Mr. Lefevre his last moments and dies there in 1721. (Its residence at the end of its life with Nogent gave place to a debate between Pierre Champion and Emile Brisson at the end of the 19th century).
  • the Coignard, printers of the king, with Jean Baptiste II who prints the first edition of the dictionary of the French Academy, and his son Jean Baptiste III who takes again his load and becomes secretary of the King and registrar of mortgages.
  • the abbot of Pomponne, abbot of Saint M3edard's Day of Soissons, ambassador of Venice, chaplain of the king, adviser of State and creator of the first company of the arc with Nogent in 1733.
  • the Vandenywer, bankers of the Dubarry countess, who will be guillotines with it.
  • the countess of Arboust, little girl of the nurse of Louis XV, which exclusively saved this last of poisoning by nourishing it with the center, leaving it only heir to the throne, whereas one attended the deaths close to Louis, Grand Dolphin, wire of Louis XIV, of Louis, duke of Burgundy, small son of Louis XIV, his wife Marie-Adelaide of Savoy, and Louis, duke of Brittany, older brother of Louis XV.

The construction of the two lines of Railroad Paris-Mulhouse and the Bastille it Varenne in the Années 1850 still accelerates the process. The viaduct, built by Auvergnats and the Belgians is destroyed first once on September 15th 1870. They are the Italians who rebuild it.

Undoubtedly attracted by rebuilding works, it is the Italian community which is established. Come for the majority from the province of Pleasure, they are originating in the Valley of Nure, not less than 40% for Ferrière, and more precisely of the frazione of Rocca, Bettola, or the Valley Ceno (Bardi), but also sometimes of the province of Novare, or of the south the Tyrol. The history of this immigration is immortalisée by François Cavanna in his novel the Wops

Isolated since 1854 by construction from the viaduct from the line Paris-Mulhouse, the commune of the Perreux sees the day after a fight of more than 10 years in 1887.

The urbanization and the installation of the highway network continue with the construction of schools, buildings and the bridge of Nogent. After the Second world war, a policy of restoration is followed, and of the small islands are built along the road main roads. The edges of the Marne are refitted with the filling of its died arm, the construction of the nautical center and the marina.
