No wave
Wedged between the Coldwave and the new wave , the No wave is current musical appeared in the district of the Lower East Side with New York in 1977. It draws its name from a compilation published at that time by Brian Eno and entitled " No New York ". On this compilation, which marks the beginning of the movement No wave , one finds four groups different from the very prolific music scene of Lower East Side.
The No wave is a coleric, hard music and bruitist, who rejects the format verse/refrain suitable for the Rock and prefers to propose the improvisation, the dissonance and the destructuration. It preserves nevertheless certain values of the Punk like amateurism and the Anarchie. The rock'n'roll-critic Yves Adrien made the praise of the groups of this current, which it was one of rare to support in France in his articles of the time in Rock' Folk.
The direct sources of inspiration of the No wave are the rock'n'roll of the Années 1960 (mainly of the groups such as The Velvet Underground, Captain Beefheart, The Godz, The Stooges, MC5, The Electric Eels,…), but also the Free jazz (Ornette Coleman, Sun Ra, Cecil Taylor, Albert Ayler,…)- already a source of inspiration of the Happy generation in the Years 1950 - and the Funk (James Brown, Cracked Kuti,…).
The principal representatives of the scene No wave are James Chance and the Contortions, James White and The Blacks, Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, Lydia Lunch, 8-eyed spy, Mars, Don King, DNA, Lizzy Mercier Descloux, Glenn Branca, Theoretical Girls, The Static, Ut, Red Transistor, Von Lmo, The Blue Humans, Judy Nylon, Y Pants, Tone Death, Rhys Chatham, The Gynecologists…
If the movement is blown in 1983, many however are the artists who, in the Années 1980, 1990 and 2000, mention the No wave in their direct or indirect sources of inspiration. Among these " enfants" No wave , one can quote Sonic Youth, Swans, The Birthday Party (with Nick Cave), God Is My Co-Pile, Dog faced Hermans or, more recently, Erase Errata, Deerhoof and Liars.
