The chleuasme (of the Greek χλευασμός , chleuasmos: irony) is a consistent process Rhétorique to add some on oneself for better clearing itself.

It will be a question for example of beginning a speech on an delicate subject, which one is known as being little disputed specialist, while saying: " I do not know there large - thing and I can hardly but contribute to pose the problème". While depreciating itself, the speaker hopes to attract on him at least confidence, at best the active sympathy of that which listens to it.

The term is found used by Greek Démosthène and some other rhéteurs .

It is necessary to distinguish the chleuasme from the Chiasme, which is a supposed rhetorical figure to give rate/rhythm to a sentence.
