No5el Chabanel
Saint No5el Chabanel (February 2nd 1613 - December 8th 1649) was a missionary Jésuite with Holy-Marie-with-country-of-Huron, and one of the Canadian Martyrs.
Born with Saugues (Gévaudan, in the current department of Haute-Loire), Chabanel entered the Noviciat Jesuit to Toulouse at age the seventeen years and he was professor of rhetoric in several colleges Jesuits. He was very estimated for his virtue and his wisdom. In 1643, it was sent in News-France, and after having studied the Langue algonquine during a certain time, it was named with the mission of Sainte-Marie, where it remained until its death.
In its apostolic tasks, he was the companion of the father Charles Garnier. Having felt a loathing for the lifestyle of Huron, and fearing that could affect the quality of its work, it the Jura more never not to leave the mission.
Chabanel was martyrisé the December 8th 1649 by Huron named Louis Honarreennha who had abjured the Christian faith. Its body was thrown in the Rivière Mohawk after being massacred. He was canonized by the pope Pie XI the June 29th 1930 at the sides of the seven other Canadian martyrs.
There is a Saint-Christmas-Chabanel parish in the Laval-native district of Saint-François-of-Laval, another in the Diocèse of Rimouski.
