The fawn-coloured basset hound of Brittany is a race of Gun dog originating in France, of Brittany (as its name indicates it).

History

It goes down from a very old race of dog, the large deer of Brittany, disappeared today. It results from crossings between this large deer and the Vendean basset hounds. This race would exist since at least the 21e century.

An official standard is written in 1921, but the race however tended to be done rare. After the Second world war, Marcel Paumbrun, then president of the Breton Canine Company, reconstitutes a breeding of quality by carrying out retemperings with the basset hound griffon Vendéen and the dachshund with hard hair.

Today, one meets especially this race in France and England.

Character

In spite of its savage air, it is a calm and affectionate dog which often tends to seek the company of the human ones.

Its with dimensions rustic and player makes that it adapts very well to any environment, including at the city but in condition of accustoming it to it very early.

As a gun dog, one employs it especially to drive out the Wild rabbit. Its rough hair enables him to venture without problem in the thickets to flush out game there.
