Presentation

The name even of these people a long time posed problem as for its C-W communication and thus its interpretation. The ancient literary sources (César, Strabon, or Ptolémée) retain the form “Nitiobriges”, but certain alternatives of César or the “Table of Peutinger” lean rather for the form “Nitiobroges”. As for the epigraphy, it is not of any help: inscriptions carrying the word " Nitiobroges" giving only the beginning of the mot. the discovery (Mailly-the-Camp, Paddle) of a torque of the medium of Ier century before our era carrying 3 times the inscription " Nitiobroges" in Greek alphabet allowed to solve the question definitively. Etymologiquement, the name " Nitiobroges" can thus result in " Those which are integrated into a territorial or political unit donnée" or " Those which have their clean pays".

The installation of Nitiobroges in the valley of the Garonne average seems rather late since one dates it from the 3rd century before our era, even only of the beginning of the 2nd century.

At the beginning of Ier century before our era, them principal Oppidum was Aginnon (plate of the Hermitage overhanging the current city of Agen).
