Ningal “the great lady”, is the Parèdre of Nanna (Sîn) the god sumérien of the moon as well as the mother of Utu (Shamash) the god sun and of Inanna (Ishtar) the goddess of the love and the war, it represents the female aspect of the moon.

The city of Ur then, after its destruction, that of Harran, will be the two principal centers worshipper devoted to the couple Nanna/Ningal. In Ur, a temple, the Giparu, was reserved for the worship of the goddess and was used as place of life to the priestesses attached to her service. Giparu was also the theater of ceremonies, in particular that of the Hiérogamie (the marriage between gods).

Ningal is present in the “lamentation on the destruction of Ur”, written towards III. In this text, she cries the destruction of Ur ordered by the god Enlil.
