Geographical location

The district of Heinsberg ( Kreis Heinsberg ) is located at the west of the Land of Rhineland-of-North-Westphalia. It has limits with the districts of Aachen, Düren and Viersen, with the district of the the Rhine Neuss and with the town of Mönchengladbach like to the province Dutchwoman of Limbourg. In the commune of Selfkant the most Western point of the Germany is.

History

The district was creates on January 1st, 1972 by law of December 14th, 1971 by amalgamating the old district of Erkelenz with the old district of Selfkant Geilenkirchen. January 1st, 1975 the commune of Niederkrüchten was separated from the district and was incorporated in the district of Viersen.
