Nine Inch Nails

Nine Inch Nails , known also under the Initials NIИ , is a group of industrial metal American creates in 1988 by the Trent Reznor. One of the characteristics of the group is to have undertaken successfully the assembly of many musical influences (pop Synth, metal, Electronica…) to come out a single sound from it having had a great influence on many group which will emerge during the Nineties (Rammstein, Marilyn Manson, Stabbing Westward…). Nine Inch Nails is also famous to have popularized the industrial Musique which was reserved up to that point, with an extremely restricted fringe experts.

Composition of the group

Nine Inch Nails are connected more with one solo project carried out by the Trent Reznor than to a true group. Indeed, this last writing, composes, plays of all the instruments, records and mixes the albums in studio. However, various musicians were engaged during the rounds or for the recordings:

Etymology

  • Axcess magazine interviewed Reznor after the exit of The Downward Spiral in 1994. They asked him how the name Nine Inch Nails had come to him, and here its answer:

    " I do not know if you already tried to think of a name of group, but generally you think of having brilliant and you look at it the next day and it is stupid. I had approximately 200 of them. Nine Inch Nails held the two weeks test, that had the brilliant air graphically and the abbreviation was easy. Ca does not have really any literal direction. Ca seems to be alarming. Hard and virile! It is a curse to try to propose names of groupe."

  • Nine Inch Nails, wants to literally say nail or nail of 9 inches (either approximately 22 cm.) It could be a question of a reference to the nails which were used for crucifier the Christ; these nails are also used to close the sarcophagi. It could also be a question of a recall length of the nails of the killer Freddy Krueger in the series éponyme.

Biography

Man Gold Machine

" Nine Inch Nails is the Trent Reznor": this sentence registered on the booklet of the first album " Pretty Hastens Machine" illustrate the fact well that this album was completely made up by the Trent itself.

The Trent creates the group in 1987 and is quickly made sign at TVT records where it will leave in 1989 its first album " Pretty Hastens Machine" , very industrial directed album which will be success only in 1991 when the Trent (surrounded musicians (and friends) engaged to play the music of NIN on scene) starts the round Lollapalooza. " there is found; Head Like has Hole" , " Terrible Lie" or " Sin". All started well for NIN when the things are spoiled: impressed by the success of the group, TVT plans to take the control of the musical direction of NIN and thus of the Trent. But this last does not hear it thus and starts testing legal battles with its recording company.

The slave Howls

The Trent then decides to record the successor of " Pretty Hastens Machine" under various pseudonyms so that TVT does not know anything of it. " Broken" leaves in 1992 and crosses completely with " Pretty Hastens Machine" by the violence of its compositions (" Wish" , " Gave Up" , " Happiness In Slavery" …) or the electro one leaves room to the fury of the guitars metal. This strange album (99 tracks but only tracks 1,2,3,4,5,6,98 and 99 contain songs) is difficult access but will be success all the same. It will be followed of its strange album of remix " Fixed" , where the songs are reassembled in a more industrial way.

The Downward Spiral

At this point in time the Trent founds its own recording company: " Nothing" (which will sign in particular Marilyn Manson), where it plans to leave the " vrai" successor of the first album. " The Downward Spiral" , concept album recalling the self-destruction of a man until his suicide, leaves in 1994 and many successes such as " deliver to us; Closer" , " March off the Pigs" or " celebrates it; Hurt" begun again later by Johnny Cash little before her death. The blackness and fury of the compositions of this album which results from the mixture from electro of " Pretty Hastens Machine" and of the guitars of " Broken" , even will inspire several musicians (Axl Pink of Guns Pink…) who will want to carry out a similar album.

However, the problems involved in drug intensify at the Trent which then will cross a black period, only intersected by collaboration with the B.O of the film " Lost Highway " of David Lynch marked by the song with the evocative title " The Perfect Drug" in 1997 and the double VHS " Closure" who contains all the clips of NIN in version not censured like 70 minutes of images backstage intersected with many lives. This DVD, although available on Internet, however never left in the trade, because of problems with the recording company.

Fragile The

But NIN returns in 1999 with the double album " The Fragile" , more directed piano and electronics and much riper according to some. The album, follow-up of its album of remix " Things Falling Apart" , is a large success in term of sale.

But again, the Trent encounters problems with drug which will lead it towards a detoxification therapy in 2002, at the time when the album live " leaves; And All That Could Cuts Been" also available in DVD and which shows the energy of the group on scene.

With Teeth

And then surprised: it is the Trent removed from its problems that one finds in 2005 and who delivers " to us; With Teeth" , where it would be said that an opaque veil was deposited on the music. Nevertheless it is a rather inaccessible album with the first listening, which delivers some titles known such as " to us; All The Coils In The World" , " Everyday Is Exactly The Same", " Sunspots" or " tubes it; The Hand That Feeds", qualified by the Trent of simple and effective. For proof of this musical revival, the Trent completely changes its group live (compound since 1994 of Danny Lohner, Robin Finck, Charlie Clouser and Cris Vrenna) for a group of unknown musicians (except Twiggy Ramirez with low, famous for its work in the group of Marilyn Manson).

The group has just finished its round in three acts. The DVD Live left to the beginning of the year 2007 and names Beside You in Time. This DVD is available with the 3 formats of the moment: DVD, HD DVD, Blu-Ray. An unexpected European round was also programmed, prolonged by dates in Japan and in Australia. It is held February in April 2007. It is about the greatest round of NIN on the continent; in France, it passed by Lille and Paris (with Olympia).

Year Zero

The album " Year Zero" on April 17th, 2007 left. According to the Trent, it is an album conceptual and noisier than the other albums. Year Zero described a future (year 2022 or Year Zero) pessimistic. The US government is from now on totalitarian, drug its fellow-citizens to keep them calm and adopts (and kills) all the " résistants" with the mode (that goes from the reactionaries to homosexual). Many Web sites, forming integral part of the album (the Trent Reznor stated to be disgusted by the marketing term in this moment), weave a true story, with these facts and characters (of which Nine Inch Nails forms part) decrees.

A second album concept which will act as following Year Zero should leave in 2008, revealing more details on the events between our days and 2022.

An album of remix of Year Zero, named Year Zero Remixed should leave before long of time. No information was launched, only the small pocket of the disc is known. This one was revealed on August 15th, 2007 on the banner page of nin.com.
