Nilgiri Mountain Railway

The Nilgiri Mountain Railway ( NMR ) or Railroad of mountain of Nîlgîri is one of the railroads oldest of mountain of the India, built in the Nîlgîri of the India of the South, in the State of Tamil Nadu. Under consideration as of 1845, the line will be finally built by the British and will be opened with the public in June 1899, exploited by the Madras Railway Company . It connects the town of Mettupalayam to Ootacamund - also called Ooty - the station of mountain located at an altitude of 2.200 Mr. This train Indian is one of the last in India to be functioned with a Locomotive with vapor.

The way of the NMR has a spacing of one meter. Between Mettupalayam and Coonoor, the Train drawn, or is pushed, by an engine with vapor built by the Schweizerische Lokomotiven und Maschinenfabrik ( SLM ) of Winterthour in Suisse, which uses a system with toothed rack to assemble the strongest slopes. The maximum gradient of the slope in this section is from “1 per 12” (8,3%), with an average from “1 per 24,5” (4,1%). In the direction of the rise, the engine is placed at the end of the convoy and pushes the Wagon S, whereas in that of the descent, it is placed at the head and thus controls speed. Between Coonoor and Ooty, the train is drawn by a Diesel loco YDM4 and the way is not equipped with a toothed rack.

The train covers a distance of 45,88 kilometers which count, on their course, 208 curves, 16 Tunnel S and 250 Pont S. Between Mettupalayam and Ooty, the line serves the Gare S of Hillgrove, Coonoor, Wellington, Aravangadu, Ketti and Lovedale. The division of Palghat of the Indian Railroads, which manages the NMR, undergoes an annual deficit of 4 crores of rupees, that is to say about 1 million US dollars. In 1999, during the commemoration of the centenary of the line, the Minister for the Indian railroads, Nitish KUMAR, announced that the line would be electrified soon.

In October 2004, UNESCO issued that the NMR would be integrated into the World heritage into semi-2005, if it then fills the criteria necessary.
