Niles Eldredge is a American paleontologist , born the August 25th 1943. He is the author, with Stephen Jay Gould, of the theory of the punctuated balance, proposed in 1972 in an article entitled Punctuated equilibrium: year alternative to phyletic gradualism within the collective work Models in Paleobiology .
