Nihon ryōiki

The Nihon ryōiki (日本霊異記 or Relation of the miraculous and strange things of Japan ) is a collection Japanese of Setsuwa (anecdotes) written at the beginning of the era Heian. Its exact title is Nihonkoku genbō zen' aku ryōiki (日本国現報善悪霊異記 or Relation of the miraculous and strange things concerning the remuneration of the good and the evil as of this life present, arrived at the country of Japan ). It is divided into three books (or Maki ), all prefaced, and contains 116 accounts, written in Chinese.

One allots his writing to the monk Kyōkai (景戒) of the area of Nara. The date of compilation is unknown but is estimated between 787 and 822.

The Nihon ryōiki offers very to texts moralizers (Buddhist Loi), but described with precision the life, the habits and mentalities of the Japan of this time.
