The Nieuwe Waterweg (literally the new inland waterway ) is an artificial mouth of the the Rhine.

It is a channel Netherlands which goes from the river Scheur (one of the branches of the delta of the Rhine and the Meuse), in the west of the town of Maassluis, until the the North Sea with Hoek van Holland.

Nieuwe Waterweg was open in 1872. It has an approximate length of 15 km. It was built to maintain the city and the port of Rotterdam accessible to the ocean liners because the natural arms from the delta were envasaient. The inland waterway is very attended by the ships which serve the ports around Rotterdam. With the outlet on the North Sea, a protective system against the maritime floods, the Maeslantkering was installed (inaugurated in 1997). No bridge nor tunnel crosses Nieuwe Waterweg.
