Massilia Sound System is a group of Reggae appeared with Marseilles in the Années 1980 which knew to develop a version “of Provence” of the reggae/rub-a-dub jamaïcain through lyrics sung in Occitan, and a recognizable sound between thousand, containing boxes at rates/rhythms and of samples picked in the local tradition or in their colleagues. Forsaken a long time by the recording companies, the group founded its own production structure Roker promocion . The group is implied for a long time in the cultural life of Marseilles multiplying the Balèti, the meals of district and other iniatives sympathetic nerves.

Massilia knew to give again its noble letters at the town of Marseilles in the Années 1990, in conjunction with the good performances of the Olympique of Marseilles and other groups of the Marseilles scene (IAM) and to thus give a positive identity to a whole generation of young Marseillais, proud of their city and its capacity to brew the cultures.

Regional bonds were formed with other formations, like the Fabulous Trobadors of Claude Sicre with Toulouse, the Nux Vomica with Nice, Talvera in the Tarn, and other formations reggae/ragga using regional values and a language. See the Line Imaginot.

February 14th 2002 with the Toursky Theater of Marseilles, the members of Massilia Sound System (Rene Mazzarino and François Ridel) saw themselves decorated with the chivalric insignias of the Ordre of Arts and the Letters.

Their last albums reinstate sonorities Rock, look further into explorations world, as the use of the Tabla S, and low make even some incursions into the drum'. In 2004, they decided to leave room to solo projects, like those of Oai Star (festive rock'n'roll/ragga), Papet J (dub), Moussu T E lei Jovents (the group of Armadillo, song).

Oai E Libertat , the last album of the group, left on October 1st, 2007. After 3 years of work on solo projects, the members of the group found themselves to work on new a opus. Digital than ever, this album confirms the distance of the group of its original musical roots, for a more electronic orientation and pop Dj kayalik and Gari Greu would have delivered a multitude of riddims to the other members of the group in order to carry out this new album.

At the time of the round of October and November 2007, devoted to their recent album Oai E libertat, the three musicians were accompanied only by 3 MC, Papet J, Moussu T and Gari Greu. Fourth MC, Lux Boot, not having been able to take part in this round for medical reasons. The members specify " that it fights against dirty a maladie" and that its absence is a " large déchirement" for all.
