The prestige of the wines of Nierstein comes from its soil, an undulating coast, the so-called red ground along the producing Rhine of the particularly vigorous and elegant wines. Its ground is composed of a mixture of ground and stone, red Grès and Argile. It is thus not astonishing only taverns and " Straußwirtschaft" (open inns in season in the vine grower) accommodate the visitor, that a great festival of the wine takes place traditionally the first weekend of majestic but also that an intense friendly relation is maintained with the famous wine locality Gevrey-Chambertin in Burgundy.
Name closed “Glöck” of Nierstein is the oldest soil of Germany authenticated by an act established into 742.
The vineyards of Nierstein rest on layers of petrified muds, which settled there approximately 250 million years ago. This rock rich in minerals constitutes the qualitative base of the Riesling years cultivated in Nierstein. The vines cultivated on a red ground comparable with that of Nierstein are rare in the world. The type of vines absorb the rock salt contained in this red ground and enrich type of vines by invaluable elements. The direct proximity of the valley of the Rhine and the exposure of the vines towards the east, the south and the west confer an excellent climate and create favorable conditions for noble wines of an incomparable maturity and elegance.
Stuart Pigott underlines the supreme position of the commune of Nierstein as quoted of the Riesling by mentioning the following vintages in its book (page 553): Niersteiner Pettental, Niersteiner Ölberg, Niersteiner Hipping, Niersteiner Brudersberg as well as the close vintage, Nackenheimer Rotenberg.
